Rabbit in a Cabbage
A good example of this sought after and rarely available automaton from Roullet and Decamps of Paris , the very popular Rabbit in a Cabbage.
The clockwork mechanism is wound by a key and as the rabbit rises slowly, it looks around chewing a piece of the cabbage. The rabbit then suddenly disappears back into the cabbage as if startled. As it rises to look around a tune plays that suits the rabbits actions perfectly. The real fur covered rabbit is in good condition. The original leaves show signs of handling and fraying in keeping with the 130 years since it was made in the Marais district of Paris. The R&D catalogue entry shown in the gallery dates from 1911.
The antique mechanism is guaranteed to work perfectly for two years (excluding shipping costs), Strangely amusing and instantly popular with all who see it. This example features its original leaves and fur and comes with its distinctive circular R&D key.
