Clown Automaton
Clockwork advertising automaton. Made in Paris circa 1900. The automaton would have been used to promote books which were placed next to it, the finger pointing at the cover. When wound the Clown moves his head backwards and forward in an affirmative gesture. The clockwork is of long duration and good working order. Unusually this automaton is in totally original condition with piercing blue glass eyes and extraordinary painted stage make up.
Papier Mache body, gesso covered papier mache head and hands
The underside of the base carries the name and address of the Bookshop in whose window it first performed at 22 Rue Dauphine in Paris.
