Cat Musicians

Musical automaton made in Germany circa 1920. Turning the small curved brass handle on the front causes music to play and the cats come to life. The Cello player bows his instrument and nods his head in time to the music while the other cat bows his violin and moves his mouth as if singing along. The automaton is in exceptionally fine condition having been displayed in a glass vitrine or display case for most of its life. The cats are papier mache and wood covered in white fur and fitted with fine glass eyes. The musical instruments are carved wood. This type of animated ‘Cat Tableau’ is rarely found in this condition. Size 30x30x16w cm.
