Singing Birds in perspex Dome
Visible mechanism, clockwork singing birds. Rarely available this example is newly made to demonstrate the mechanism which can be seen working in the clear high quality perspex dome. The birds sing to each other in turn with crystal clear bird song. Underneath the mechanism can be studied in operation, the three chambered bellows pumps air into the piston whistle. The flow of air, the notes of birdsong and each birds movements are guided by the dentile edge of the large brass cams, the speed controlled by a 7 bladed fly fan turned by a steel worm shaft. This symphony of mechanical ingenuity can be further wondered at by demonstrating the ‘intermittent’ function which causes the bird song to pause for up to a minute between each phrase of the song. How it achieves this without electronics or any obvious means can be determined only by careful inspection.
The other advantage of the perspex dome is its durability and longevity, the feathered mechanical birds are sealed against dust and humidity which assures many years of bird song and mesmerising mechanics.
