Clockwork advertising automaton. Made in Paris circa 1900. The automaton would have been used to promote books which were placed next to it, the finger pointing at the cover. When wound the Clown moves his head backwards and forward in a very affirmative gesture. The clockwork is of long duration and performs positively. Unusually this automaton is in totally original and good condition with piercing blue glass eyes and beautifully painted stage make up.
Papier Mache body, gesso covered papier mache head and hands
The underside of the base carries the name and address of the Bookshop at 22 Rue Dauphine in Paris.
